About this property

Welcome to Tower House

Located in the heart of Oxford at 15 Ship Street, Tower House is a laid-back guest house set within a 17th-century townhouse. Its historic character is evident throughout, featuring quirky architectural elements like wooden beams and uneven floors, which some guests find charming while others may note the dated aspects such as steep stairs and compact room sizes. The property offers low-key, air-conditioned rooms with free Wi-Fi, catering well to travellers seeking basic but comfortable accommodation in a central location.

The guest house operates a no-breakfast policy, though rooms are equipped with kettles and complimentary tea, coffee, and hot chocolate. Parking is available for a fee, and the property maintains a smoke-free and kid-friendly environment. Notably, Tower House does not accommodate pets, nor does it offer a pool, fitness centre, or airport shuttle services. Check-in is from 15:00 with check-out by 11:00, and contactless check-in is available for convenience.

Its prime city-centre setting places guests within easy walking distance of major Oxford landmarks, including the Sheldonian Theatre, Jesus College, and Oxford railway station. Nearby cultural attractions such as the Ashmolean Museum, Bodleian Library, and Christ Church offer diverse options for exploration. The location is especially suitable for visitors attending events at the Sheldonian Theatre or those prioritizing immediate access to the city’s academic and cultural sites.

Reviews reflect a mixed but generally positive experience; visitors appreciate the hotel’s unique historic ambiance, excellent location, and quiet rooms. However, some note the absence of daily housekeeping and the communal bathroom facilities in some rooms, which may not suit all travellers. The property is best recommended for guests seeking a distinctive, central base with a social mission, rather than those expecting the full range of hotel services or modern conveniences.

This is NOT a hotel! We stayed there for 3 nights and did not see anybody working there. No change of towels or emptying bins in our room. No restocking of water or tea supplies. No breakfast. The fan in the bathroom did not work, leaving us with a very damp room after a quick shower. Quirky shower, loud workers just centimetres outside our room, uneven walls and squeaky floor. It all sounds rather shitty, and it will be if you come here with a expectation of it being just like any other hotel stay. But if you want something different, a place with lots of charm, great location and just be able to stay in a house that is 400 years old, then you have come to the right place! We had a great time staying here, kids loved it and if we ever go back to Oxford, this will be the place we want to stay at. Highly recommended! An added bonus is that they are a social business, supporting Student Hubs, an organisation aimed at supporting students. We had the Foundry and Bastion rooms, both en-suite (although Bastion only had bat tub, not shower). Please be aware that this is not a hotel. And you must be able to handle walking steps and stairs that are not up to modern standards.

Knowing the high prices in Oxford, this Townhouse is a little gem! We had a double room with shared bathroom and both were extremely clean. Calm road and didn’t hear the other guests either. Staff very friendly and welcoming. The breakfast was simply divine!! Just a heads up about the mattress due to the small size of the room, it was a uk double size and a bit too soft for me.

The man on reception was friendly and helpful, allowing us to check in early. I really liked this quirky hotel, from it's wooden beams to it's beautifully tiled Victorian bathrooms. The rooms are spacious, very comfortable and had everything we needed. The complimentary hot chocolate went down very well. The rooms are well furnished with nice wooden furniture and artistic lamps. The location is perfect for visiting central Oxford, you are in the middle of it all. Perfect for graduations at the Sheldonian Theatre, which is a very short walk away. If you are a tall person, you might not like it here, but for everyone else if you want a very comfortable, slightly quirky old fashioned hotel in a perfect location look no further.

Had a lovely 2 night stay here- perfect location-walking distance to everything we wanted to see. Only downside was a communal bathroom but never met another person so it was fine in this case. Shower cubicle is a good size but shower head right in the middle so hard to use. Incredibly hot, as it is everywhere, and being at the top if the building( the pink room) it was even hotter. Fan was provided but duvet and pillows were so incredibly thick they were suffocating. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate, milk and sugar provided. Big TV with Netflix. Key to front door and room door so you can come and go as you please.

The Tower House is in an excellent location, right in the centre of the city. The building is very old and quirky. The front doorstep is very high so not really suitable for anyone with mobility issues. We had a lovely room on the ground floor. There is no breakfast here but there is a kettle in the room with tea, coffee and chocolate plus there are plenty of eateries nearby. We will definitely stay there again on our next visit to Oxford.
